Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezín

When: Jun 06th, 2013 8pm
Where: St. Vitus Cathedral, Prague

Event overview

Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezín commemorates the remarkable story of courageous Jewish prisoners in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp, who sang Verdi’s Requiem as a statement of defiance and resistance against their Nazi captors. This unique concert-drama has been performed to worldwide acclaim and features a full performance of the Verdi Requiem, with actors, video testimony of surviving members of the choir, and original Nazi propaganda film footage. In 1943 conductor Rafael Schächter promised his chorus “all of this is a rehearsal for when we sing in Prague, in freedom.”

Seventy years later, The Defiant Requiem Foundation is honored to fulfill his pledge.

Defiant Requiem is presented under the auspices of the President of the Czech Republic, Miloš Zeman; Cardinal Dominik Duka, O.P., Archbishop of Prague; H.E. Mr. Yaakov Levy, Ambassador of the State of Israel to the Czech Republic; and the U.S. Embassy, Prague.

This concert is sponsored by Nina & Sol Glasner in memory of members of the Fischl family (Pilsen) who, like so many others, suffered imprisonment at Theresienstadt and did not survive.

Support for the Defiant Requiem Foundation has been provided by the Metabolic Studio, a direct charitable activity of the Annenberg Foundation.
